Strong Belief is Ordinary

چکیده
Abstract In an influential recent paper, Hawthorne, Rothschild, and Spectre (“HRS”) argue that belief is weak. More precisely: they the referent of believe in ordinary language much weaker than epistemologists usually suppose; one needs very little evidence to be entitled a proposition this sense; just concept belief. I here contrary. HRS identify two alleged tests weakness – neg-raising weak upper bounds tests, as call them which claim think pass. But several other expressions English for attributing belief, all fail both tests. Therefore, even if are correct refer attitude, it does not follow conclude by raising some problems accounts guessing, building on HRS's arguments, due Kevin Dorst, Matt Mandelkern, Ben Holguín.

Strong Belief and Weak Assumption
Battigalli and Siniscalchi’s [Journal of Economic Theory 106, 356-391 (2002)] notion of “strong belief”in conditional probability systems and Yang’s [Journal of Economic Theory, forthcoming] notion of “weak assumption”in lexicographic probability systems are unified by the same requirements on preferences. Our analysis, hence, reconciles the tension between Battigalli and Siniscalchi’s characte...
متن کاملStrong Belief and Forward Induction Reasoning
We provide a unified epistemic analysis of some forward-induction solution concepts in games with complete and incomplete information. We suggest that forward induction reasoning may be usefully interpreted as a set of assumptions governing the players’ belief revision processes, and define a notion of strong belief to formalize these assumptions. Building on the notion of strong belief, we pro...
متن کاملStrong Syntax Splitting for Iterated Belief Revision
AGM theory is the most influential formal account of belief revision. Nevertheless, there are some issues with the original proposal. In particular, Parikh has pointed out that completely irrelevant information may be affected in AGM revision. To remedy this, he proposed an additional axiom (P) aiming to capture (ir)relevance by a notion of syntax splitting. In this paper we generalize syntax s...
متن کاملNew Ideas: Ordinary is Extraordinary
With the initial issue of this journal, a new challenge has been offered to the world of sports nutrition: initiate "team oriented" research and clinical trials in order to make dynamic progress in terms of understanding and applying nutrition principals to the field of competitive sports. It is our further challenge that these teams think "outside the box" in terms of their approach to elucida...
متن کاملIs belief reasoning automatic?
Understanding the operating characteristics of theory of mind is essential for understanding how beliefs, desires, and other mental states are inferred, and for understanding the role such inferences could play in other cognitive processes. We present the first investigation of the automaticity of belief reasoning. In an incidental false-belief task, adult subjects responded more slowly to unex...
